Learn more about Mother of Pearl

Mother of Pearl is the common name for the iridescent nacre found inside oyster shells. It is the same substance that is deposited around an object that becomes lodged in the oyster to become a pearl. Some past cultures regarded colorful pieces of mother of pearl as more desirable than pearls for jewelry and other objects. For example, before the 19th century, Japanese shell divers who found pearls didn’t bother to keep them, and it was said that Polynesian children used pearls as marbles. Pearl of Wisdom:
In the late 1800s, oysters in Northwestern Australia were primarily farmed for the lucrative mother-of-pearl button and inlay trade.
